Keeping Up With Minor Car Repairs Can Save You from Major Nightmares

When it comes to car repairs no one enjoys digging into their pockets to spend even a dime. But the reality is that cars don’t run perfectly for-ever, so eventually we are going to have to break down and get those brakes fixed. The trouble I have is when I take my car to the shop to get new brake pads and they tell me I need 300.00 more work done to my car. That’s why it’s important to find a local car mechanic that you can trust.

Even minor car repairs like brake pads, and a simple oil change can get quite expensive if you take your car to the wrong person. Six months after I moved to my new town, I asked around and finally found an honest mechanic who knew my money would only stretch so far. When my old car died in a car accident, I became the proud owner of a Ford Explorer. I’ve only been driving him for a couple of months and although he runs pretty well, I have noticed some new rumbling sounds. Before I take him on my summer trip to Florida, I will take him for a check up. My car just had an oil change a week before I purchased it, so I don’t need to worry about that. But I need to make sure the front and rear brakes are up to par, as well as add some Freon to the air-conditioning unit.

If we keep up with minor repairs we may end up saving more money in the long run. It’s the major repairs that kill our bank accounts. There are some things we can learn to do ourselves that can help save money. For example: last year one of my headlights burned out. This cost me less than $10.00 t fix myself. I went to AutoZone and a kind salesman replaced the burned bulb with a new one. I watched this person, so if the bulb burned out again (which it did), I would know how to change the bulb myself (and I did). If I wanted to I could probably change my own oil, but for less than $20.00 I can get that done every 3,000 miles. The key is “regular” maintenance”. If you can keep your vehicle maintained, then even minor repairs can be kept to a minimum.

So how do we need to do to keep our vehicles running smoothly all year? Regular car maintenance should include:

These are just the basics of car maintenance. There are minor car repairs that you can actually do yourself, saving you tons of money. Here are a few do-it-yourself repairs.

With some ingenuity, you can save money making some of these minor repairs yourself. But if you’d rather entrust your car to the care of a mechanic, that’s okay too-just be sure to shop around so those minor repairs don’t end up turning into major nightmares!
