Chevy Nova…The Other Love of My Life!

Most people own at least one car. But to own your dream car is quite another story. While I can’t complain too much about my Ford Explorer, I still dream of my 1972 red Chevy Nova. I’m not talking about any Nova. I’m talking about the Nova SS with the 350 four-barrel with 200 net horsepower. The 1972 Nova SS was a great performer for its time. This hot rod clocked in at 15.42 seconds at 88.49 MPH. This was one muscle car that I could only dream of having…and still do. The 1972 Nova was so similar to the 1971 model that only an expert could tell the difference between the two. And even then, the expert couldn’t be sure.

Car prices have sky rocked over the years. A new car these days can coast anywhere from ten grand to a heft six figure. The cost of a brand new 1972 Nova ranged from $2,351-$2,469. If you’re wondering how many were manufactured, there were 349,733 to be exact. When I lived in Florida I had my eyes on this particular Nova. Everyday when I walked my son to school I would walk past an auto body shop. And there she sat-the most beautiful 1972 Nova I have ever seen. She has rims that sparkled and she had hot rod written all over her! She was a cherry red and I fell in love with her the first time I laid eyes on her. I prayed for that car for 4 years. She started out at ten g’s, with the final price just below seven grand. One day I walked past that same auto body shop, and she was gone. My heart sank 1000 feet below sea level as I began to mourn for my new loss. How I ached for this red hot mama and now she was gone. What was I thinking? I couldn’t afford her anyway. Where ever she is, I hope they are treating her well.

So here I sit with my 1994 Ford Explorer. I paid less for it than my dream Chevy Nova. But it runs great and I have no car payments. I have friends that lost their jobs and nearly lost their vehicles because of car payments that cost as much as a mortgage payment. Perhaps one day I’ll see her again in some strangers’ driveway with a 4-sale sign on her front window. Perhaps, I’ll have enough money to search for her and bring her home with me-where she belongs. Everyone has their dream car. If you’re a man then you have that one special car that you owned as a teenager. Or maybe it’s a car you’ve always wanted to own. Don’t think just because I’m a woman that I love to shop and cook and have no other interests. There are plenty o women who love cars. There are women who love old cars too. You won’t have to drag me to a car show. When my 11 year old son asks, I gladly grab my keys and head out the door. As a matter of fact there’s a car show in the next town over this weekend. It’s a classic car show! Take a guess where I’m going This Saturday. There will be plenty of classics to feast my eyes on. And if I’m lucky, maybe I’ll see her posing in her coolest stance-shiny rims, cherry red paint, and an attitude to match. I’ll drive home in my Ford Explorer and I’ll go to bed dreaming of my 1972 Chevy Nova. Sweet dreams!
